RATS BIOLOGY AND HABITS
Rats are some of the most troublesome and damagingrodents in India. They consume and contaminate food,damage structures and property, and transmit parasitesand diseases to other animals and humans. Rats habitatand thrive under different climatic conditions. They areoften found in and around homes and other buildings,farms, gardens, etc.
Their nests are built from soft material like paper orgrass chewed into small pieces. Rats will climb ifnecessary to enter a building. Some species of rats areexcellent swimmer. The common species of rats foundin India are Mus musculus (house mouse), Rattus rattus(roof rat), Mus musculatus (mice) and bandicoots (BigRats).
Rats of either species, especially young once, cansqueeze beneath a door with only a 2 cm gap. If thedoor is made of wood, the rat may gnaw to enlarge thegap.
